Movie Overview:
Directed by John Huston, the film is set in German East Africa during World War I. It was adapted from the 1935 novel by C.S. Forester and is celebrated for its on-location filming in the Belgian Congo and Uganda.
Cast and Roles:
The film features two of Hollywood's most legendary stars in an unlikely romantic pairing:
• Humphrey Bogart stars as Charlie Allnut, a rough, gin-swilling riverboat captain. This performance earned Bogart his only Academy Award for Best Actor.
• Katharine Hepburn plays Rose Sayer, a prim and proper British Methodist missionary. Hepburn received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for this role.
• Robert Morley appears as Reverend Samuel Sayer, Rose's brother.
Plot Summary:
After the Germans burn down her mission and her brother dies, Rose is forced to flee with Charlie on his rickety steamboat, the African Queen. Despite their clashing personalities, Rose shames Charlie into a daring plan: they will travel down a treacherous, unnavigable river to attack the Königin Luise, a large German gunboat blocking British forces. As they face dangerous rapids, leeches, and enemy patrols, the two mismatched strangers eventually fall in love
